  35. I just uploaded tutor2.zip. It is a tutorial on percussive patch making and
  36. gives also a few more informations.

  38. I would recommend reading tutor1.txt in patchkit.arj before doing tutor2.txt.
  39. I would also recommend reading the docs that come with SOX on how to use SOX,
  40. cause after all it is a tutorial for PATCH, not for SOX!

  59. exist, but HOPEFULLY someone will pull their finger out and release a driver
  60. soon. Then I suspect traffic on that list will grow exponentially.

  86. I was playing with Black Parity just last night.  It ran fine, with a little
  87. snow.  When I used the no-snow option the darned thing copped a runtime
  88. error and quit.   I do, however, have my GUS set to the defaults. ( I wish I
  89. didn't... I'd like to use a 16 bit channel.)

  110. Hi everyone. Sort of on the topic of PAS-16's / Gus daughtercards, etc...

  112. The GUS daughtercard apparently is meant to have some sort of hardware
  113. based compression/decompression. Now I did so well with my questions
  114. about 48khz sampling a while ago that I thought that some of the technical
  115. types could help me out and explain what this means to idiots like me?
  116.  
  117. I presume this is not compression/expansion like in the music effects boxes
  118. (amplitude modulation so as to flatten out the amplitude of the incoming
  119. signal/expand the amplitude of the outgoing signal). So is it compression
  120. in the sense of the lossless compression algorithms (like the one used
  121. in Pkzip, etc.) or is it some sort of lossy compression used 
  122. specifically for audio data (like in the new CDC's and recordable CD's)
  123. - a kind of jpeg for audio? Or is it something else entirely?
  124.  
  125. I think the SB16 also has some sort of features like this. Anyone heard
  126. anything about this? And if so, do all these cards use the same compression
  127. format (so that recording can be moved across platforms?).

  129. And if it's so great, why don't CD players use it?
  130.  
  131. And what does PCM mean (Pulse Code Modulation??)? How is a PCM sample
  132. different from a non-PCM sample?

  169. get Syndicate to work with GUS.  There have been
  170. many messages, all with too few details.  So I
  171. sat down, took all the detail, added some of my

  213. The key things are the change of SYND.BAT and the removal of the
  214. EMM386.EXE driver from CONFIG.SYS.  Also, there should be no options
  215. on SBOS.  When I used options...it crashed.  Volume settings are
  216. OK.  You can use the Syndicate patch 'GUS-SYND.EXE' instead of
  217. modifying SYND.BAT.  I know the Syndicate manual days that it will
  218. work with EMM386.EXE, but I had solid hard crashes on my HP VECTRA
  219. 486/33MI when I tried to use it in any configuration.

  253. The Parity demo works just fine for me, beginning to end.  My GUS is at
  254. 220h, DMA 3/3, IRQ 12 and 5.

  269. Don't worry too much about the SBOS options.  All the dozens of games I've
  270. tried worked without any -o or -x switches.  Many of the options in the
  271. list are unnecessary.  I think that's why it's not being updated anymore.

  284. Make sure you have at least 570k conventional memory and 1 Meg or more of
  285. EMS.  The game drops certain features (such as speech or music) if it's
  286. short on memory.

  379. I have uploaded GUSDLY01.ZIP to archive.epas.utoronto.ca in
  380. the directory /pub/pc/ultrasound/submit.

  382. GUSDLY01.ZIP contains GUSDELAY.EXE v0.1 and DUSDELAY.TXT.
  383.  
  384. GUSDELAY.EXE is a program written by David MacMahon (me) that
  385. enables your GUS to record data and playback those same data
  386. after a delay.  The delay can be so short that you can't
  387. notice it, or it can be as long as the GUS' memory/sample
  388. rate will accommodate.  It demonstrates (quite well) that 
  389. simultaneous recording and playback is both possible and
  390. well within the realm of the GUS and the low level SDK.

  406. I just d/l'ed megem15b.zip last night.  I ran megem.exe and then tried to
  407. run the emuset.exe program.  It gave me an error msg stating that it
  408. couldn't find the ultrasnd.ini file.  Did I accidentally delete this file
  409. by mistake?  I can't find the file any where on my hard drive.  I didn't
  410. bring my GUS disks to college, so I haven't been able to check there.  I
  411. believe my disks were version 2.05 (I'm one of the many who have yet to
  412. receive the upgrades :) ).  Thanks.

  440.    There's a demo of the new Return to Zork game at wuarchive
  441. (/pub/msdos_uploads/game_demos/zorkdemo.exe) and I'm happy to say it
  442. sounds INCREDIBLE with the AIL drivers.  To get it working, copy
  443. gf1midi.drv to the directory (I couldn't get digitized sounds working,
  444. I'm not sure if there even are any in the demo) and execute the demo
  445. with the command "made demo -o -m:gf1midi".  
  446.    Now if only it's as good as the other Zork games were...

  459. have the latest version of SBOS 2.010b, and have talked to both Gravis and
  460. Maxis, but I get no reply.  Any hints out there?

  469. Continuing on the thread of games.. Anyone playing this one on the list? 
  470. I noticed Space Hulk has AIL drivers (sound.drv and midi.drv in the
  471. subdir dr*). However, it doesn't have any roland support and
  472. it won't work when I replace it's own drivers with Gravis' versions.

  474. Has anyone solved this straight out, or would it require a patch like
  475. Dune II, does this company use a weird version of the Miles drivers as
  476. well?
